January's Pick: Glossy Abelia
Abelia x grandiflora

I have a list of favorite shrubs, and the Glossy Abelia is on that list. This plant has been apart of my landscape plants in the past 3 houses I have lived in and landscaped . Abelia grows in zones 5a to 9b. There are over 30 species of Abelia ranging from 3' to 10' in height and width. The plant forms a vase or round shape , depending on the species. The Sherwood Abelia is a dwarf, compact spreading plant that is about 3' tall and 3' wide.

The foliage is a glossy evergreen that emerges purple/red in the spring and then green. The plant produces a tan fruit. They will produce blooms in late spring and early summer that are white to pinkish trumpet-shaped flowers, again depending of species.  Abelias will grow in full sun to partial shade and acid to alkaline soils. They have a low salt tolerance and medium drought tolerance. Pests do not seem to bother Abelias.

Abelias are used as foundation, boarder, mass planting, in containers or planters, as screens, hedges, and specimen plants. They are also used to attract butterflies.
